Mechanism

The mechanism of action of acitretin is unknown, however it is believed to work by targeting specific receptors (retinoid receptors such as RXR and RAR) in the skin which help normalize the growth cycle of skin cells.

Monitoring & workup

Baseline workup

•Fasting lipid panel
•LFTs
•CBC
•HCG x2 (monthly if female of childbearing potential — iPLEDGE for isotretinoin)
•Review contraception plan (see pregnancy field for washout)

Ongoing monitoring

•Lipid panel + LFTs monthly x initial, then every 3 months
•HCG monthly for the duration of treatment (iPLEDGE)
•Monitor for depression / mood change, IBD flare, night vision, xerosis
